The Adventures
We have had a much quieter week this week, compared with all the adventure of the past little while. It has been nice to have a change of pace, although we have spent most of our downtime trying to clean all the red dirt from the car and caravan, which we have decided is completely impossible! The locals refer to the red dirt as "pindan" which we think makes all our stained clothing and possessions sound a lot more exciting and adventurous.
We started the week in Derby where we spent some time visiting the local sites and learning more about the history of the town. It was originally a major port for moving livestock from the Kimberley with lots of relics of this era still present around the town. However, we were unable to see a number of the historical sites in town as a tv show was being filmed which meant they were closed to the public. We were, however, lucky enough to meet a really lovely couple who took us out for a campfire on the marsh - which is apparently a favourite local activity during the dry season.
After Derby we made our way down to Broome, which has been a massive change in pace for us. We had heard that Broome is always busy, however, literally every caravan park in town is booked out - including all the overflow places that do not take bookings! For the first time on our whole trip we were actually starting to stress about where we were going to set up camp! Fortunately, barely anyone had ventured up to the free camping on the peninsula north of Broome, where we have been able to enjoy the most beautiful camp site right on the beach. We have seen so many whales and dolphins go cruising by and have been very spoilt with our own patch of unspoiled beach to call home! We have managed to get a booking for a place just out of Broome for the second half of this week so we are excited to go and explore more of the town.
It also looks like we will be spending a little more time in this area than we anticipated, as it was discovered during our caravan service that we have damaged some of the suspension bushes on the van. The technicians literal words were "gee you guys have flogged your van!" So we are having to wait for parts to be shipped up from Newcastle so they can be replaced and we can get back on the road again. Although, we aren't complaining as this area is a literal paradise!
Kodak Moments
Apparently this is the longest cattle trough in the southern hemisphere with a length of 120m! This was a major watering point for stock being droved into town. - Derby Sunset over the marsh - Derby The sight of these beautiful boab trees never gets old! - Derby High tide at the jetty. At low tide this area is a mudflat. The size of the tides up here are crazy! - Derby After forgetting to take marshmallows on the Gibb we finally got to have s'mores with our campfire! - Derby As always, one of the first places we visit in a new place is the port! Saw a lot of fish being reeled in so this is one port I want to go back to! - Broome
